About Us

Huitzilin Wakan - Circle of Ancestral Ceremonies

Huitzilin Wakan is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the ancestral ceremonies of the Red Road. Our name unites two sacred languages: Huitzilin (hummingbird in Nahuatl) and Wakan (sacred in Lakota), reflecting the spirit of unity and respect that guides us.

Our Journey

For over 20 years, we have kept our ceremonies alive, walking through different lands without a place to call our own. Only our shared dream and sacred vision have sustained us on this path, keeping the ceremonial fire burning despite lacking a permanent structure.

Huitzilin Wakan was born with a clear purpose: to establish a sacred space of our own where our ceremonies can continue to flourish for present and future generations. While we currently gather at Dragon Fly in Caliente, California for our annual Vision Quest ceremony (Hemblecha), our dream remains to secure permanent land under the foundation where our ceremonial fire can burn for generations to come.

Vision Quest 2026: A Journey of Prayer, Nature, and Community

Every year, participants from different backgrounds gather with Huitzilin Wakan in the mountains of Southern California to take part in Vision Quest, a nature-based ceremonial experience rooted in prayer, personal reflection, community service, and cultural preservation.

Before anyone enters the mountain, the community comes together in preparation. Families, volunteers, elders, and participants unite to organize camp, prepare supplies, support one another, and create a foundation of service that sustains the entire gathering. These moments remind us that personal transformation does not happen in isolation—it is supported by community, responsibility, and shared purpose.

Vision Quest invites participants to step away from the distractions of modern life and reconnect with nature, simplicity, and inner reflection. Surrounded by the beauty of the California wilderness, individuals have the opportunity to cultivate gratitude, resilience, leadership, and a deeper relationship with themselves and the natural world.

At Huitzilin Wakan Inc., our mission is to preserve ancestral traditions while fostering personal growth, cultural education, environmental awareness, and community connection. Through outdoor gatherings, volunteer service, educational programs, and ceremonial experiences, we provide opportunities for people to reconnect with values that are often forgotten in today's fast-paced world.

The preparation shown here represents more than logistics—it reflects the spirit of service, cooperation, and commitment that makes each gathering possible. Every contribution, no matter how small, becomes part of something larger than ourselves.
